Good Works Are To Glorify God. Not Self.

Titus 3:14

And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.

  • Good works are done in service to glorify Christ Jesus, making Him known (Ephesians 2:10). Doing good to our fellow man with a selfless attitude is part of that service (Matthew 22:36/40). We do not do 'good works' in order to be 'seen by others' or to get praise from them (Matthew 6:1/4).

  • Many who profess to be followers of Jesus do that very thing today (doing good for approval from others), and Jesus clearly says: "They have received their reward". In other words, your good deeds must be from a heart of selfless service to glorify God and not from selfish ambition (Philippians 2:1/4, James 3:16).

  • If we only do good to be seen by or accepted by others, then our fruit will be rotten. If we 'build our own kingdoms' with the idea of 'this will get me extra points with God', and not 'I am doing this to glorify my Father in heaven and to make His Son known', then we should not be surprised to find them in ruins at the end (Matthew 7:13/27).
