Romans 8:16/17
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Have you ever suffered for the glory of God? If you cannot answer this with an honest YES, then this brings many things into question. The follower of Jesus fully understands with time that we WILL suffer, that it is PROMISED on this side of eternity (2nd Timothy 3:12). If we understand reality, we know that we have suffered before Christ because of how broken the world has always been. But we also understand that choosing Jesus comes with its own sets of consequences (2nd Peter 5:8/9). Even in this, Jesus is still with us… “behold, I am with you, even to the end of the age”.
We have many in the Western Christian world that will try to convince you that “suffering for God is from the enemy, because God only does good things for us”, but if one has taken the time to study the Word (John 14:26, John 16:13) and looked at the world as it has always been, we understand that this is simply not true. The history of the church is full of blood, martyrs and countless multitudes (even as you read this) who have had to lay down their lives for Jesus, counting the cost, fully understanding that if one loves Jesus, TRULY loves Him, then they will be willing to lay EVERYTHING down if the moment calls for it (Revelation 12:11).
To suffer with Jesus is to be GLORIFIED with Him. No, we do not ‘seek’ suffering like some crazy person, but, if suffering comes to us on account of staying true to Jesus, how are you required to respond? If your response is one of offense, it will eventually lead to denial of Him (Matthew 24:9/14). If it is unwavering faith, then we will endure as He requires of us (Revelation 2:10, 6:9/11).
