The Weightier Matters Of The Law Are Fulfilled In The Great Commandment And The Great Commission.

1st Timothy 1:8-11

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

  • The law is fulfilled in this: That we love God with our entire being, and our fellow man as ourselves. The weightier matters of the law are fulfilled in the Great Commandment and the Great Commission (Matthew 22:36/40, Matthew 28:18/20). If we cannot love God with our entire being, then we have no real reason to love our fellow man, and thus no desire to make Jesus known to others... sadly, this is much of the church in the West today.

  • We know that the world is broken and in need of salvation. If we have placed our full trust in what Jesus has done to bring salvation (John 3:16/21), then we know that salvation is found only in Christ Jesus alone (John 14:6). If we truly love our fellow man, then we do not keep this Good News to ourselves, but make it openly known. Being known through 'our love for one another' as 'His disciples' comes in keeping the law by loving God enough to do as He commands by taking His Good News out to the nations, and especially in our local communities, and not merely going to a building once a week.

  • The law is not a 'list of rules to keep', but it is the way that God has intended for us to live faithfully for His glory (1st John 5:3). The law reveals sin, which then points us to our need for the Savior Jesus. The law is really just COMMON SENSE given by God to a people that tries to do things according to their own understanding or 'going with the flow' like the world has been doing for ages. The law comes naturally when we love God with our entire being, and love our fellow man as ourselves.
